This GUIDEBOOK will walk you through all you need to know to be able to survive your stay in Lethe, TN. Should you need further tools and resources for survival, please reach out to your local guide, Charon. Oh - and welcome to Lethe!
The town of Lethe has been a long-standing testament to the spirit and determination of the people who established it when it was nothing more than flora, fauna, and the open sky. Tucked against the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, the town is known for being an idyllic stop for many of the touring explorers of the beautiful, teeming mountains. Not only is the lovely town of Lethe renowned for its hospitality businesses, but it also boasts of having some of the most delicious, unbuckle-your-belt type of eateries, restaurants, and bistros. After, you might find yourself wandering in the trails that lead to the mountains, exploring the many creeks and streams. Should you want to know the town’s history, take some time to visit the mines and museums that highlight the figures it was built by.Be sure, though, to tuck yourself in carefully at night, should you be guided by your whims to stay for the evening. If you notice that the locals sequester themselves in at night, pay it no mind. Simply make sure to lock your doors, shut your windows, and if you happen to hear someone call your name — no you didn’t.And when you wake up the next morning to find a corpse in your backyard, or a bloodied handprint on your window…no you didn’t.By the time you’re outside of the town’s county limits, you’ll have forgotten anyway.Welcome to Lethe!
Lost in Lethe is a horror, lite sci-fi/supernatural hybrid site set in the fictional town of Lethe, TN. While being set in the present, Lethe seems to be obstinately stuck in the late 80s/early 90s, with tech, trends, and aesthetics to match. No one pays this any mind, though, it’s simply one of the many oddities of Lethe — not unlike their suspicious surplus of tunnels and mines, the shining eyes that seem to be around every corner once the sun dips down, and the strange shapes and noises that seem to emanate from the TVs when they’re left on too long.Unknown to many, but well-known to a select population, the town has horrors not only deep in its soil but horrors that walk out and about, as eerily happy and seemingly functional as can be. They are only known among their own kind: the LAZARI, the LOST, and the PSYCHS. There are, of course, horrors that they are unable and unwilling to explicitly acknowledge — like the Church of Wayward Saints, who many refer to under their breaths as the CULTISTS. The tension between the Cultists and those who do not fall under their sway has been long-standing and long-developing. It seems to be boiling over within the last handful of years due to the new pastor of the church — but pay it no mind, he’s likely to show up at your doorstep sometime soon anyway.Character-focused and member-driven, Lost in Lethe seeks to pull you into its uncanny and morbid world to tease out your creativity and have fun engaging with the horrors that threaten to consume us all. Join us on this journey and welcome to Lethe!
The overarching thread that ties all of Lethe together are the strange happenings that occur around town due to the expansive and haunting Down Under, which corrupts the seemingly idyllic nature of the town. The residents of the town, no matter their mundanity, are unable to keep its corruption from seeping into the different facets of their life. The politics of the Cultists versus those who seek to remain independent from the collective, the strenuous efforts made to keep the corpses from piling up (and walking around), the way that the Down Under seems to swallow more and more souls with each passing year. However, there are more threads to follow, should a character wish to involve themselves in the more conspiratorial goings-ons of Lethe. Below are the subplots that you can volunteer your characters for. Please note that involvement with these subplots necessitates consistent activity and involvement, and requires comfortability with having your characters undergo developments that may involve injury or (potentially temporary) death. These matters will be communicated beforehand by staff. If you’re interested in having your character play an active role in the development of any of the listed plots, let us know,THE DOWN UNDER — There is very little known about the Down Under. No one knows if it’s always existed or if some phenomena birthed it into existence. The earliest records seem to date its activity back to 1982 — but it is not known if that’s when it was discovered or if other records prior were lost. For the most part, the mundanes of Lethe are able to coexist with it. They know their town is a little odd, perhaps a little more macabre than most, but by and large many are able to live wonderfully drab lives. They perceive Lethe as nothing more than another idyllic, busy-bodied nexus of their life — well, they were able to for a time. Within the last two decades or so, the oddities and fatalities have both escalated in their frequency. Bodies drained of blood, rising numbers of missing persons, strange sightings of shining lights in the mountains. Bizarrity is beginning to feel like the new norm, and the people are Lethe are beginning to wonder how long it’ll be before something breaks. They can feel it in the air, a looming sense of impending doom. Maybe, though, that’s just what it feels like to live in the most idyllic town in all of America.
THE GOD WITHIN / THE GOD WITHOUT
It cannot be denied that the Church of Wayward Saints has left its mark on Lethe — without it, the town would not be as formidable in its reputation, community, and wealth. In the more recent years, however, the Church has been quite vocal about this fact, with its church-members wanting to have acknowledged the importance of their ideology and their contribution to the development of Lethe. The Founding Council, however, is beginning to grow wary of the support the Church’s pastor is rallying. There is a shift, a tension that is beginning to color the interactions between the church-members Cultists and the other locals. Despite the determination to maintain the veneer of normalcy and pleasantries, people can sense the animosity seeping into the daily interactions. With their renewed efforts to evangelize, it’s becoming clear to many that action will have to be taken soon. Though the “official” city council have not taken a stance in matters concerning the Church, it’s an open secret that they’re beginning to grow impatient with the bullish stance the current pastor has taken in pushing his own agenda. So, the Founding Council has decided to take matters into their own hands. It was clear that their policy of tolerance for the Church of Wayward Saints had painted them as weak, but the wolf in sheep’s clothing has a far easier time eating away at the flock. So, they are content, for the time being, to let the pastor mistake their caution for weakness. The Council is trying to grow their numbers in the hopes of reinforcing their legacy and formidability within the community. It’s said, among the locals who know other locals, that they’re gathering together those within the town who haven’t fallen under the Church’s sway. Rumor says that those who are welcomed into the Council’s circle have the veil lifted from their eyes, that they see Lethe for all it is. That’s just a rumor though, so who’s to say?One thing is known to be true, though: the Council and the Church of Wayward Saints aren’t above getting bloody about things. It’s just a matter of who’s willing to fire the first bullet.CHAPTER ONE — The Founding Council and the Church of Wayward Saints the Cult are beginning to feel the pressure of their differing agendas. The Cult wants to take over the town with their ideology, which would bring to light the Down Under and its manifestations, while the Founding Council seeks to protect the town and its community with ignorance. It’s a matter of time before someone lights the fuse — aren’t you eager to see who lights it first?THE DEVELOPMENT — READ THE THREAD HERE. At the order of Fr. Benedict, a chaotic retinue of "God's" soldiers went to burn down the last remaining church of Lethe, St. John the Baptist's Catholic Church. The particular individuals involved in this are known as the Changelings and are aiming to amass more influence, power, and people so that the pastor might be knocked off his throne.CHAPTER TWO — READ THE DEVELOPMENT HERE. The Founding Council convene their meeting, but the Church of Wayward Saints proves it is not on a mission of peace and complacency.THE DEVELOPMENT — READ THE THREAD HERE. In order to cement the devotion and forge a stronger sense of loyalty, EVELINA KAMENEV and FR. BENEDICT THAIN are having the congregation bear witness to/undergo a trial of faith. While known to many, The Changelings should be considered a newer organization within Lethe. When compared to the Church, their numbers are lacking, but their loyalty to the group is in spades.NOTE — THIS WILL BE UPDATED AS EVENTS UNFOLD. PROMETHEUS AND HIS FLAME
They weren’t welcome at first — and they still, by and large, aren’t. Chariot Engineering Research Company has been tied to Lethe as long as Fableland Park has been. It’s credited for the fun rides and attractions that have made the theme park into the popular tourist attraction that keeps the town’s lights on. Within the last five years though, their efforts to integrate themselves into the community’s fabric has become much more pointed. The company started sponsoring festivals, donating to the schools, and has even started offering tours of their facility so the locals are able to see what goes on behind its metal doors. It’s said that the “donations” they make to law enforcement is double whatever you think it is. People can’t help but be skeptical of the renewed efforts to establish itself in the company, especially after so many years of conducting their operations away from the prying eyes of the locals. Now, though, with the new CEO and unrelenting determination to make something novel and groundbreaking, the company has pivoted away from its area of expertise. It’s turned from rudimentary mechanics and is now focused on human biological engineering — at least, that’s what rumors say. Within the upper echelons of Lethe society, for those who are in “the know”, it’s rumored that the company is interested in researching the effects of the Down Under as well. Allegedly, the CEO believes it might be an underutilized resource of all their research lines up and proves his theory.CHAPTER ONE — The CEO of Chariot Engineering Research Company, Dante Yun, has been biding his time for the last four years since taking the helm of his parents’ company. Now that all the pieces are in place, it’s time for him to finally make his move. The Chariot Project team members have all been carefully selected, as have their research subjects. It should be noted that all the research they’ve collected on the matters of the Down Under and the factions of Lethe were provided generously (at the cost of a couple of hefty million) by the Founding Council. The first expedition will be underway when the majority of team members have been primed and readied. However, research on the voluntary subjects has been underway for about a month now and the CEO is impatiently awaiting the results.CHAPTER TWO — READ THE DEVELOPMENT HERE. The Chariot team embarks on their first expedition. Everything goes wrong.NOTE — THIS WILL BE UPDATED AS EVENTS UNFOLD; as of now the research team is unable to identify or locate a Lazari for research purposes. Tucked against the haunting and expansive Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, the town of Lethe bustles with vitality and life. A tourist attraction for the surrounding cities, the town is considered a popular weekend trip for many — with its idyllic downtown, allegedly haunted buildings and stores, and its warm and welcoming locals, it draws many in. And it rarely lets any leave. You would do well to make sure to shut your doors at night. Never open your windows or doors to the odd knocks and noises, and never listen to the call of the Down Under. Locals should note that the Down Under is buried under the entirety of Lethe, so all are susceptible to its influences. However, areas that are populated with tunnels and mines should be particularly avoided.Upper Lethe — When the town was known for its mining businesses and lush lands, families settled and stayed. Many of the older, more established families populate Upper Lethe. Towards the far edges of Upper Lethe is where you’ll find Fableland Park. Over the span of the last two decades, much of the community has legislated for the closure of the theme park, but it’s too much of an attraction. Upper Lethe is also where many choose to enter into the forest preserve and campgrounds.
Cobain Ranch — One of the oldest ranches, and also the most well-established. They say that the Cobain family actually was one of the founding families of Lethe, they just got brushed over because they got their land in a bloody way. Currently in operation and thriving. Sometimes, when willing, Cobain Ranch might even host a rodeo or two during the summer.
Cory Gray — Farrier + Blacksmith
Darragh Cobain — Owner
Edmund Hargrave — Ranch hand & Rodeo Medic
Kelly Cobain — Ranch hand
Morgan Wilder — Ranch hand
Maximillian Graves — Ranch hand
Fableland Park — It’s believed that the park has changed ownership a number of times, but it currently resides under the Yun family’s watchful eye. While a bit unsettling and haunting at night, the park during the day is quite an attraction to see. It boasts of colorful carnival games, thrilling acrobatic performers, and maintains its more dated treasures well. Care to take a little trip through the Tunnel of Love, anyone?
Shane Klein — Operations Manager
Bluebell Honeycutt — Firestarter
Charity Arroyo — Aerialist
Mason Fontenot — Drag Clown
Monument Mines — The Monument Company carries both the great privilege and shame of being the reason for the mine’s existence. It’s said they were conned into mining the area, all high and giddy on the promise of striking diamonds, Now, they’ve turned it into a museum and mining venture where you can see the equipment that had been used long ago. While there’s no record of accidents ever having occurred in the mine, people say they’ve seen ghosts and figures wandering around the tunnels or stumbling out from the mouths of the mines.
Mockingbird Inn — One of the oldest inns/B&Bs, the Mockingbird is a beloved staple of the community. It’s booked out more often than not and is kept tidy and clean for all who care to rest their weary heads. The inn is a favorite tourist spot and takes great pride in the meals they serve their guests. ( No Cultists Allowed )
Diana Cobain — Owner
Sweetings Farm — Established as a meat-packing plant some two generations ago, Sweetings Farm opened to a near-instantaneous commercial success so great that you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in town these days that remembers how to separate the word ‘meat’ from the name Sweeting. Despite a wave of controversial scandals regarding animal cruelty and worker’s rights leaked via anonymous interviews in the Daily Journal in the 90’s, Sweetings Farm has somehow managed to stay as strong and profitable as the day it opened. Under the fresh wave of leadership of siblings Ares and Blair Sweeting, the company (publicly) promises modern solutions to old problems, even if those solutions might look a little like a shallow bandaid over a gaping wound to the well-trained eye. Sweetings started with family, and under its umbrella the goal is that we can all feel– and eat together– like one. Don’t worry about the skeletons in the closet.
Ares Sweeting — Owner
Blair Sweeting — Manager
East Lethe — It was once the epicenter of commerce and community — when the mine was booming, many of the shops, restaurants, and businesses. East Lethe was well on its way to becoming the district that housed the downtown area, but as the mining business began to peter out, so too did its promise. Now East Lethe houses Old Town, which has made something of a come-back within the last decade. Now, it houses more mom-and-pop shops with the odd boutique here and there. Its upswing is owed to the community college and the newcomers that have settled into the town and made a place of their own. While some of the more affluent figures in the community turn their nose up at the residents of East Lethe, it takes pride in its working-class, close-knit community. Don’t mind the fact that many tend to disappear in this particular district.
Box Office Video Store — It’s the place to be on Friday nights — teenagers loitering, locals bustling in and out to get their hands on a movie they’ve seen twenty times over by now. There aren’t many new movies that come out on VHS, so the selection is limited, but the Box Office makes up for it with its popcorn toppings and pop.
Casey Maryland — Night Manager
Cobain Motors — Founded by the Cobain family, the auto shop has been around for a number of decades. They're the first people to turn to whenever you've got car or motorcycle issues, which tends to happen a lot whenever the fancier tourists drive into town. Don't ask them where they get their parts, though, you don't want any of the Cobains to start looking at you weird. Customer service is questionable, but they do a damn fine job at fixing up whatever junk rolls in.
Darragh Cobain — Owner
Dexter Tolliver — Mechanic
Kelly Cobain — Mechanic
Maximillian Graves — Mechanic
Moonlit Roller Rink & Arcade — Conveniently located right next to the Box Office, Moonlit Roller Rink & Arcade is well-loved and well-maintained. The machines require a certain amount of upkeep and only a few select middle-schoolers know how to actually get the Pacman game started, but it’s a fun place to be. Just, make sure not to stay too late, OK? The locals aren’t the only ones that love the arcade. The bright lights attract more than the mundane.
Juliette Spencer — Owner
Rhoda Caldwell — Part-Time Float
Rowan Conway — Attendant
Siobhan Crooke — Waitress
Auntie Deena’s Diner — Can you really say you visited Lethe if you didn’t go to Auntie Deena’s Diner? Open 24/7, 365 days a year, Auntie Deena’s Diner is where you can find the strongest cup of coffee on this side of the country and the best grits you ever will eat. Don’t hold them to that, though. Make sure to stay on the chef’s good side — if you do, you’ll get an extra dollop of butter in your grits.
Lethe Community College — The college has only been established within the last decade, thanks to a generous anonymous donation, and has flourished in that span of time. It’s still somewhat sparkling, even after its 10th anniversary. Many of the students who graduate leave and rarely return, while the rest usually pick up right where they left off after getting their degree. Some of them end up interning at the NERO Research Group. No one really knows what they really do, though…
East Lethe Firestation — The fire department of Lethe is well-funded and well looked after, considering how pivotal they were in negating the spread of the great fire of 1982. They're just as overworked as the police department, but they find themselves spread less thin. The things they see are no less weird, though. Please remember to thank your Letheian firefighters for their service during the arson outbreak of January 18th!
Noah Pike — Firefighter
East Lethe Library — An enviable institution, the East Lethe Library collection is one of the most well-maintained collections in town. It doesn’t have much competition, being one of the two libraries in Lethe, but it’s a favorite place to visit for many of the locals — especially when they’re doing a speakers series and have authors visit. It’s said that the last head librarian went missing, so they’re currently looking for a new one. Just in case anyone is considering submitting their resume.
Miu Aoki — Acting Head Librarian
East Lethe High School — The oldest school Lethe has to boast of. Many of those from the less affluent communities in Lethe attended the high school, and in the wealthier circles it's not looked at kindly. However, the school takes great pride in its long legacy and hallowed halls. What many don't speak of is how creepy the school can be at night, the odd figures and noises that are seen ambling in the darkness. There's a legend that if you break into the school at night, you're likely to get a glimpse into hell. That's all rumor though (as far as locals know).
St. John's Catholic Church — Founded in 1939, St. John's was a community center and institution within the district. Their "fish fries" were the place to be during the Lenten season. On a cold winter night, the church mysteriously burned down. Since then, the church has had to conduct their services on the Church of Wayward Saints Cult's property.
Miss Selene's Antiquities and Oddities — Named after Aislinn Cobain's pet tabby cat, this is the perfect place to find anything from vintage clothes to art dating back to Lethe's beginnings. Aislinn claims that those pendants in the back of the shop help protect against what goes bump in the night, and that those pressed flowers on the wall over there have kept all sorts of strange animals out of her shop. If she truly believes that or is just trying to get a leg up on sales is anyone's guess, but, you can't deny she finds some cool stuff.
Aislinn Cobain — Owner
Mercury Brokers — A pawn shop accepting all manner of goods (legitimately come by or otherwise), Mercury Brokers in the place to go if you have something you're willing to part with for a little quick cash. The current owner is making an effort to increase the shop's emphasis on antiques, artworks, and estate sale items, but the shop's somewhat gritty reputation lingers — and the bars on the windows and bulletproof glass at the counter really don't help.
Robin Penrose — Owner
Bloom & Spur — Bloom and Spur is a combined florist, horse accessory shop, and small handmade pottery corner in a narrow storefront with a frequently changing display window. One side is dedicated to fresh flowers and greenery, with labeled buckets, vases, ribbons, and a workbench for walk-in bouquets and custom arrangements. The other side sells horse accessories and handmade leather goods, including tack add-ons, mane and saddle decorations, and small custom pieces for rodeos and ranch work. A small shelf section holds handmade pottery such as bud vases, mugs, bowls, and planters that pair well with gift bundles. It runs more like a working studio than a boutique, with most building and prep happening in the back while the front stays clean and ready for customers.
Hildebrand Greever — Florist
Fairy Cooper — Ceramicist
Swallowtail Beauty Parlor — Swallowtail Beauty Parlor is a low, sugar-pink box of a building with hand-painted lettering and star decals, lace curtains bunched in the front window, and sun-faded hair posters taped to the glass. Inside, the floor is blue checkerboard, the walls are bubblegum brick, and a row of pink vinyl chairs sits under vintage bonnet dryers like three glossy little spaceships. Styling stations line the opposite wall, narrow pink counters, heart-shaped mirrors, cords looping everywhere, while Patsy Cline or Dolly Parton hums from a tiny radio and the whole place smells like hairspray, coffee, and something sweet you can’t quite name or maybe, that's just Caroline Thompson herself. Walk-ins welcome. You’re right on time!
Caroline Thompson — Owner/hairdresser
Lower Lethe — Sounds foreboding, doesn’t it? Lower Lethe. Contrary to what a person might assume, Lower Lethe gleams with hospitality during the day and glows with its hotels, bars, and businesses at night. The downtown that people hoped East Lethe would be is what Lower Lethe actually is. Many locals of the surrounding towns and cities enjoy the charming and idyllic sights Lethe has to offer, and at night the bars offer opportunity for community and engagement. Should you wish to have a night out on the town (with the guarantee of surviving the night), Lower Lethe is the place for you!
Lethe Police Department — You’d be surprised at the amount of work the police force of Lethe are subjected to — especially for being such a (relatively) small town. It really isn’t that surprising, though, when you have your ear to the ground. Finding bloodless — or half-eaten — corpses have become something of a norm within the last couple of decades, and it doesn’t seem like their workload is going to lighten up anytime soon.
Javier Rivera — Detective
Josephine Sloane — Coroner
Kiyoshi Aoki — Detective
Luis Cortes — Coroner II
The Oracle Cinema — One of the more popular places to frequent in Lethe, if you’re not at the Box Office Video Store, you’re likely hanging around The Oracle. There are some that come in from out of town just to see films on, y’know, real film again. It occasionally closes every couple of months or so, due to odd accidents and deaths here and there, but just wait a couple of days. Things are typically back up and running in no time!
Francisco Torres — Owner
Annie Ford — Ticket Taker
Lethe Radio Station (WGRV) — There aren’t a lot of locals who don’t listen to Lethe radio. Sure, it gets kinda weird at the 3 AM mark where the static starts to drown everything else out and weird screeches are heard on the other end…otherwise, tuning in always means some great music and even better gossip.
Rhoda Caldwell — Midnight DJ
Iris Bistro & Eatery — Owned by the Valentine family and currently run by their eldest, Romeo Valentine, Iris is quite well known for being one of the ritzier places in Lethe. It’s perfect for a romantic date night, especially if you’re looking for an eatery that specializes in Italian cuisine. Don’t mind the constant yelling and shouting that occasionally filters through from the kitchen…
Romeo Valentine — Owner & Head Chef
Town Hall — It’s arguably the most boring and mundane building in all of Lethe. City Hall isn’t really known for much other its courthouse and extremely long, extremely tedious lines. There are some who report a handful of figures that frequent it at the odd hours of night. Others claim that its the ghosts of the founding families, all riled up from the sickness that’s polluting the town.
Elmira Smith — Public Works Supervisor
Zahir El-Masri — Public Defender
The Daily Journal — Get your gossip hot off the press and read what the town government doesn’t want you to know about. The light is always on in the building, so feel free to stop by whenever, even if it’s just for a chat. Their motto is that there’s no such thing as too much information! It would be a nice change of pace, though, to hear something other than the umpteenth report of the umpteenth missing person….
Marley Wilder — Press Photographer
Quinn Harrow — Investigative Journalist
Xanna Thompson — Investigative Journalist
Boundary — A warehouse-turned-nightclub that boasts a reputation for blatant, in-your-face heresy, Boundary is, for all intents and purposes, a veritable slip of shadow one might feel beckoned into in order to indulge themselves freely. The stark-red neon crosses that light up walls done in renaissance-style portraits of the Virgin are popular, must-see staples with locals and tourists alike, the gaudy, overwrought extremism in aesthetic and message both a large part of what keeps the dancefloor flooded with people night after night. The drinks are plentiful, cheap, and overpoured, which also never hurts to draw a crowd.
Ares Sweeting — Owner
Aspen Prose — Bartender
Bluebell Honeycutt — Dancer
Dodger Honeycutt — DJ
Frankie Klein — Bartender
Honey Hudson — Server
Ilona Dreher — Bartender
Judas Rhinehart — General manager
Open — Bar manager
Open — Bartender (3/5)
Open — Server (3/10)
Sky Darling — Server
Open — Bouncer (0/3)
The Crooked Spine — A new addition to the town, the Crooked Spine was old and now made new, as it is the once abandoned bookshop connected to Anita’s Bakery. Its display window showcases a variety of genres; selling mostly well loved, second hand books, dog eared and stained classics, and the option to order new releases for special pick up. Owned by Octavia Crooke, expect towering rows of bookcases with room for more, small reading nooks throughout, and perhaps a few whispers in dark corners. Stop by the bakery next door for a treat on your way over.
Octavia Cooke - Owner
Lorna Hargrave - Clerk
The Kamenev Collective — A co-op that exists purely to showcase the dark and strange art of Lethe. You might recognize a few sculptures constructed by the founder around town. The Kamenev Collective has a gallery in downtown, classes to teach certain art methods, and host an array of community events. There's significant ties to the Church of the Wayward Saints that many seek to blot out.
Evelina Kamenev - Founder & Artist
West Lethe — It’s very easy to tell when you enter Lethe’s western district — the homes are sprawling, shining, and enviable. There are beautiful stables, lush estates, and the occasional smaller, more cottage-like houses to be found there as well. It’s the only part of Lethe that doesn’t budge up against the mountains — instead, it has a breathtaking view of the Smoky Mountains that many envy. The founding families of Lethe all have their homes in West Lethe and nothing is ever going to shake them from their roots. While they do have to deal with their neighbors, the Church of Wayward Saints, this particular district makes many covet what they don’t have.
Valentine Manor — There’s only one reason why people know about Valentine Manor — the parties. No one really thinks to comment on the weird chills they get down their spine or the way shadows seem to warp and linger. All anyone really cares about, at the end of the day, is that the drinks keep flowing, and the Valentine family know how to make that happen.
Romeo Valentine — Resident & Party God
Cesare Valentine — Resident & kinda Manager
Wayward Saints Church & Retreat Center — The Church owns a rather sizable plot of land in Lethe, part of which they’ve established a church and a retreat center. The retreat center is primarily utilized by cultists parishioners, and they would prefer to keep it that way. All are welcome in the church, though, especially those who fear the glory of the after life.
Fr. Benedict Thain — Pastor/Overseer
Jessa McLeod — Former Volunteer/Retreat Facilities Manager
Leon Delfino — Wannabe Leader
Max Flynn — Priest
Ophelia Hargrave — Landscaper
Prudence Finch — Outreach Liason
Rosalba Lamb — Nun (novice)
Lethe Medical Center — The medical center was built out of necessity, what with the recent uptick of “odd happenings” in Lethe. The mayor was all too glad to promote the project and move it forward, thinking it would be a great source of economic stimulation for the town. That is yet to be seen, though.
Aleks Montague — Nurse
Inanna Hariri — ED Nurse
Isabeau Clarke — Chief of Psychiatry
Makar Zaytsev — Surgeon
Saskia Baran — Nurse Practitioner
The Outskirts — Lethe is a vast town whose borders reach further than most people assume. There seems to be an odd thing that happens a couple of times a month — no matter the state of their car, whether it be new or old, people find their vehicles stalling soon after entering into the county lines. Due to this regular predicament, the city council saw fit to establish vital areas of business to curtail the issue. The success of this endeavor is arguable, but these businesses remain as bastions of safety and sanctuary (for the most part) when entering into the city limits. Remember to never stop for hitchhikers.
Honeybee Apple Orchard — Owned by the Wolfe family, the orchard is a popular tourist stop and the epicenter of many town events. The fruit wine is something of a point of pride for the town and the Honeybee Apple Festival draws many in. Just be sure to avoid the part of the orchard that smells overripe, nothing ever seems to grow properly there…

Marauder Motel — At one point in time, this was likely a very popular and well-maintained motel. However, that point has long since passed. The motel now stands as a foreboding gatekeeper of Lethe’s borders — so oftentimes, tourists and passers-by skip it entirely. There are the unlucky few that have to stay overnight due to a flat tire or drained car battery. Very, very unlucky…

Chariot Engineering Research Center — Chariot Engineering is responsible for the institution of Fableland Park. Much of the machinery and structure of the theme park is thanks to them. It seems, though, within the last decade or so they’ve pivoted in their area of research. Human engineering seems to be the main interest of the research company’s CEO. Don’t say that out loud, though, unless you want to see a suit with a manila envelope full of documents in front of your door.

Ninth Circle Bar — There aren’t a lot of locals who frequent this bar aside from the Howlers, a local biker club. That’s for good reason, of course, since bloody brawls are a regular occurrence. More often than not, your drink is likely going to end up on the floor or in your face considering how rowdy it gets at night. They keep to themselves, though, and are considered a more “closed” community, so if you find yourself in the bar it’s probably a good idea to escort yourself right out.

Tolliver Spirits and the Lost and Found Tasting Room — Started by the Tolliver family, it’s said that the distillery is as old as the town of Lethe itself and even sold moonshine through prohibition. Bottles of Tolliver Whiskey are a staple in every grocery store and bar in town and even famous outside of Lethe as tourists come from all across the South to tour the facilities. In the last few years, Adrian Tolliver opened the adjoining Lost and Found Tasting Room, a place where you taste the new batches and hopefully catch a live blues performance. Some say it’s a manifestation of his desire (but inaction) to leave Lethe. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen, but the music is good enough and the drinks certainly are great.

These are the locals, tourists, and transplants of Lethe that are blissfully unaware of the existence of the Down Under and its varying…products. While they are by and large unaware and uncaring of the hellishness that parades around Lethe, there are a handful of people who are mundane and aware. However, those who are aware have noted the difficulty of “looking past the veil”. Most who are able to are those who have been personally affected by the Down Under, either by getting attacked by its “products” or having a near-death experience that has made them more sensitive.
The Church of Wayward Saints was founded on the notion that all who are lost return, inevitably, to God’s flock once more. It was at the beatified Margaret Kennedy’s endeavors in 1982. After she prophesied her husband’s resurrection, the efforts to establish the Church of Wayward Saints were renewed tenfold, with or without the approval of the official church. For many years, the church’s number of parishioners remained steady with its tightly knit community ensuring its strength. Within its own ranks, the miracle of the lost lover, Kennedy’s husband, is a known and revered tale. No one thinks to question how Margaret Kennedy was nowhere near what one would describe as a Christian woman. No one questions what happened to her husband after — what he was like or how the Kennedys met their grisly end. They only spoke of the miracle of the dead coming back to life, of God’s favor and the promise of resurrection. Those who have the veil lifted from their eyes are even able to bask in the knowledge of the LOST and the LAZARI. When revealed to the cult church members are lauded and welcomed. They’re direct gifts from God, aren’t they? They should never be denied, unless they want to incur His Holy Wrath.DETAILS — The cultists (church members) aren’t exclusionary, in fact far from it what with the way they all but drag people into their hallowed halls, but they certainly are secretive about the onus of their beliefs. Whether it was by nature or a grand design of the Kennedys, resurrection and the after-life are a source of fixation and the focus of much of the church’s dogmas. There are cultists that are fully aware of the entities that exist within Lethe’s borders, but the newer members remain, for the most part, unaware of the goings-on of the town. The current pastor of the church is a contested individual among Lethe’s locals, and a rather polarizing figure. He has gone against the wishes of the mayor and council (as well as the Secret Council) what with his more forceful recruitment methods. The Church of Wayward Saints has cemented itself as a well-established pillar of the community, but decay is an inevitability — even the dead succumb to it.

The Legion of Saints (limitless)
There aren’t many who can speak to the existence of Lazari, but they exist — masked by big, warm smiles and shiny, gleaming eyes. Although, masked isn’t quite the proper way to describe them. They walk among the tourists and locals, tied at the hip with the one who manifested them, their obsessor. It’s not really known whether or not the obsessors know about the part they play in the manifestation of Lazari, but it is to be assumed. While information is limited on the manifestation of Lazari, there are aspects of their darker natures that regularly manifest themselves. The first known case of a Lazari fully manifesting is the case of Margaret Kennedy’s husband, Adam Kennedy. From what can be gathered, there are 4 stages that occur, but due to missing data and research there are only two that are confirmed to be accurate and true. The following information is what is currently known to the individuals in Lethe that cared to investigate into the matter of the Lazari. There are two individuals involved with the manifestation of these entities: there is first the obsessor and the second is the unfortunate subject of these obsessions. It is difficult to pinpoint a commonality in the obsessors, due to scarce data, however from interviews it can be gathered that the obsessor has a tenacious sense of self and a rather forceful will. The subject, after an uncertain length of time, begins to demonstrate the traits of the Lazari:
Memory loss - memory loss occurs for the subject of the obsession, they first demonstrate symptoms of short term memory loss that increases in frequency and length, mimicking the symptoms of dementia.
Wanderings - subject becomes prone to wandering, manifesting in bouts of sleepwalking. For some reason, subjects seem inclined to wander to the mines and surrounding forests. It should be noted that in these instances, openings to the Down Under are found close by. Sometimes people wander for days, sometimes they wander for months and are found by the odd hiker along the mountain trails.
[DATA MISSING ON THIRD STAGE - IS CURRENTLY BEING COLLECTED] - FOR ALL LAZARI TO NOTE; the cravings for organs has now been triggered, specifically: eyes, tongue, and liver are particular areas of high hunger satisfaction. All Lazari also have noticeable mood changes during this period (until the next subplot drop) where they are irritable, defensive, and prone to lashing out.
[DATA MISSING ON FOURTH STAGE]
DETAILS — Again, not much of the data that has been collected can be said to be true or accurate. However, upon a thorough literature review there seems to be commonalities between many of the Lazari that make them identifiable. The creatures are known to have reflective eyes that gleam unnaturally. They also, in many qualitative interviews, seem to have a keen sense of empathy with their obsessor while also citing dark urges that their obsessor is the perpetrator and/or victim of. This seems to escalate when neglected or separated from their obsessor for too long. When further data is collected, it will be consolidated in these records. Research continues.
While the Down Under is known to house many horrors, it seems that the most difficult to retain within its hellish domain are the Lost. They slip in from the tunnels, mines, and graves that were dug too deep. Their true nature is unknown — whether they are parasites or demons or ghosts, no one can rightfully say, not even the Lost themselves. Their favorite guises to take on are the husks and near-dead bodies that litter Lethe’s borders. Sometimes these corpses are barely cool, other times the corpses have become home for maggots and worms. When the Lost finds their preferred form, something of a bad miracle takes place. The bodies return to their prime form and the Lost are “birthed”, clawing to life with no notion of what they are or from where they came. The memories the Lost retain are not their own but, according to research, are the true and accurate memories of the corpse they inhabit. Their ability to recollect the pasts of the individual they inhabit is patchy — although the memories seem to increase in vividness, accuracy, and detail the longer the Lost inhabits it. However, so do the nightmares. It should be noted that there are those who believe the Lost’s nightmares pertain to their former state of existence in the Down Under. Due to the fact that there is scarcity in verifiable sources on this matter, this cannot be confirmed to be accurate. What can be confirmed accurate are the three discovered sub-species of the Lost.
Blood-Drinkers - These subspecies of Lost subsist on large amounts of blood. Should they starve themselves from this source of sustenance they fall into a feverish state that manifests in fatigue, blood-tears, visual hallucinations, along with the expected symptoms of a common fever. Longer than a week without their source of sustenance results in their painful death.
Flesh-Eaters - Inarguably the most distressing of the three known subspecies, flesh-eaters subsist on fresh human or animal flesh. It needs to be fresh in order to be of any satisfaction to them. When they are unable to have their hunger satiated, flesh-eaters begin to experience visual and auditory hallucinations, trance states, and episodes of rage. Longer than three weeks without their source of sustenance results in their painful death.
Energy-Leeches - The most difficult of the three to identify, energy-leeches subsist on extreme human emotion such as happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, and anger. Due to the slow way in which they ingest their food, they must spend a considerable amount of time around their victim. When they reach the point of starvation, energy-leeches go into deep sleep and begin to ingest the dreams of those within their facility. As a result, these victims become insomniatic and go into sleep psychosis. Longer than three weeks without their source of sustenance results in their slow, painful death.
Energy-leeches are unable to feed on Psychs.
DETAILS — Records on the Lost are more robust. The Lost are able to eat and ingest food, as any other person is able to, but they are unable to digest and receive nutrients in the same way. Due to the nature of discovering these key points within the starvation process, experiments can no longer be ethically conducted. Additionally, extensive research has emphasized that humans are not only the preferred form of sustenance for the Lost, but it was confirmed that animals are a paltry substitution. It is best to eliminate Lost before they reach the extreme point of starvation, for the safety of the community.
There are a handful of individuals that have managed to wander into the Down Under and make it through alive. It never lets its victims part from its hellish embrace unscathed, though. They’re changed, each and every one of them spat from its mouth with a curse of their own to bear — or blessing, depending on who you ask. Records on those that have chosen the label of Psychs are more robust as many of them have willingly volunteered themselves for research. None of them are able to provide accurate or coherent accounts of how they found themselves in the Down Under, but the snatches of description they are able to provide suggest that it was their own personally tailored hell. When they return, all Psychs recount experiencing a series of migraines that had them incapacitated for days to a week. Their gifts develop from that point on with varying levels of mastery. When their abilities are overextended, all Psychs experience severe fevers and bleeding from ocular orifices. Some have even attested to physical aches and pains, and the manifestation of phantom injuries. All Psychs describe having issues with their sleep, from vivid nightmares to bouts of sleepwalking. They have been categorized as having one of the following five abilities:
Psychometry - Those who have visions when touching objects/people. These visions seem to vary in their accuracy and vagueness. Some have described it like trying to watch a movie under rippling water, others have stated it’s like trying to piece together a puzzle without a frame of reference or understanding how the pieces fit.
Clairaudience - Those who hear things such as thoughts, memories, etc. Everyone seems to “hear” things differently — sometimes it manifests as voices inside one’s head, other times it’s faint whispers and snatches of conversation, and for others it’s as if they’re listening in on a conversation an arm’s length away.
Retrocognition - One of the more unique Psych categories, retrocognition gives individuals visions of the past. This is usually triggered by the space they’re occuppying — for example, if they’re in a coffee shop, they’re likely to receive visions of former patrons or the long-passed owner. The visions are usually preceded by the smell of burning toast and can last up to 5 minutes at a time.
Clairsentience - This ability allows those who have it to perceive people’s current state of emotions, sometimes even manipulate them but that is dependent on the individual's charisma and persuasive abilities. They are not plagued by visions, but the ability does seem to be dependent on the individual’s level of mastery. Interestingly enough, these Psychs seem to have a predisposition towards sensitivity with light and oftentimes need to wear glasses of some sort when they’re utilizing their ability.
Claircognizance - These are, perhaps, the most accurate ability that any Psych could have. Claircognizance is, in a nutshell, the ability to have insight about a person, situation, or event without any evidence — and knowing it is truthful and accurate. It seems to be one of the more difficult abilities to pin down, due to the fact it’s difficult to differentiate from “gut instinct” but those with claircognizance are never wrong. Their ability provides no insight into the future whatsoever, but it does provide knowledge that may not have been known.
DETAILS — Those who participated in Psych research, according to records, have disappeared or are deceased. Due to the fact that the former research team that gained this insight and created these records are also missing or deceased, it is impossible to gain any further details beyond what has been provided. Should any more records on the Psychs be discovered, they will be collected and archived.
It was once known as Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow — a parish under the umbrella of Catholicism, before it underwent an evolution and became the Church of Wayward Saints. There was friction between the Council at the time and the pastor of that church, an exchanging of words, and a fire that forced the community to start anew. Devotion and attendance to the church waxed and waned until Margaret Kennedy positioned herself as a leader within the parish in the year 1982. Newly converted from her occult practices, she was a prodigal child, born again with a terrifyingly clear vision of the new direction the faithful ought to turn to. That direction being readying oneself for the afterlife and the promise of resurrection. Since this renewal in 1982, attendance to the church has redoubled and renewed. Those who are part of the congregation consider it their personal mission to bring the faithless into the fold. Under the direction of the current pastor, Fr. Benedict Thain, this has become a particular point of focus. While the numbers of the parish have increased, as has their sway over the more affluent of the community, it has become apparent to him that the existence of the Down Under means that God has granted them the opportunity to convert the nonbelievers by revealing to them the existence of hell and its manifestations. But the Founding Council seeks to do anything but that — settled into their secretive and covert ways. There are rumors among many of those who have had the veiled lifted that the Founding Council seeks to monopolize it for themselves, that they eradicate the manifestations of the Down Under in order to limit knowledge of its existence.Among the congregation, the manifestations of the Down Under are venerated as holy beings — when they’re revealed, at least. There has only ever been one confirmed Lazari among the parishioners, and that was Margaret Kennedy’s husband, Adam Kennedy, in 1982. No Lost has come forward either to claim their place of honor among the flock, but none are discouraged. It’s a difficult thing, to acknowledge the closeness that one has with Heaven, Hell, and the in-between.ADDITIONAL DETAILS — While it is verbally agreed upon by all members that the Down Under exists and it’s a miraculous portal to the afterlife, all characters are free to invest as much or as little belief in the doctrine as they choose. Up until this point, no Lazari or Lost has come forward for their own reasons, but if you have a character of these species you wish to be involved in the cult you can have it established that Fr. Benedict Thain visited your character and requested they hide this fact. Should you wish to flesh out any details, please message Rosey.— Mass is held on the weekdays at 8:30 AM. Sunday services are held at 10 AM and 12 PM.— Confessions are held everyday at 12:30 PM except for Sundays.— The Church of Wayward Saints regularly hosts the All Saints’ Day Festival as well as the town’s Easter Egg Hunt.

The company was once known for its novelty attractions and rides in Japan, South Korea, Germany, and France. Then, Chariot Engineering set its sights on establishing itself in the United States. It was received with skepticism but ultimately the company’s products and services won the vast majority over. The pattern was repeated when the company established itself in Lethe, the locals treating the company and its entourage with suspicion and abrasiveness. Only after Fableland Park opened did the tension begin to wane — the community was far too curious about the circus acts, rides, and attractions the Chariot company introduced into the town. The rapport that was cultivated with Lethe locals was hard earned, but the pride the Yun family had in their efforts was what allowed them to become a staple of Lethe. It didn’t hurt that they made sure a portion of the money that was earned was redirected back into the pockets of different city council members and the more influential individuals of the town.It was rather convenient, though, how no one in Lethe had heard about the demise of the Chariot company’s parks throughout the years — the freak deaths, the cover-ups, the rumors that the company and its parks were cursed. His parents nearly let their reputations fall to ruin, so their dilapidated legacy was left to their son. He likened himself to the great, overlooked visionaries of history — bred and born for the likes of greatness that was unattainable to the masses. It was with this notion of grandeur and evolution in mind that Dante Yun took the helm of the company. Instead of steel and bolts, he was more fixated on flesh and bones. The Chariot Engineering Research Company now specializes — or is endeavoring to specialize — in human genetic enhancement. They say he was inspired by an encounter he had with a stranger in Lethe. No one knows the details, and truthfully, no one really cares to. The new era for Chariot Engineering Research Company was a long time in the making. Within four years, the old guard was phased out and the new researchers brought with them near fanaticism to their endeavors. It’s difficult not to be fixated on the promise of human evolution, on the promise that even death itself was no match for the ambitious and fanatical few.ADDITIONAL DETAILS — The company’s “official” headquarters are located in San Francisco, California — that facility is run by the C-suite board members of Dante Yun’s company. They by and large let Dante and the research team operate independently and provide them with funds and machinery when needed. The team's main area of operations is believed to be located in the outskirts of Lethe, however their actual research facility is located beneath Fableland Park. Try to forget that information immediately, though, it’s far better to look the other way.

It’s said that their blood is what makes the soil so rich. The founding families of Lethe were there when the town was nothing more than a feral spit of land. They weathered the storms, floods, tornadoes, and fires — try as fate might to pry them away from Lethe, it only served in making them more determined to make something worthwhile among the trees, creeks, and mountains. There is no record of what the families experienced, no tangible evidence of what they endured. There are only the stories that have been passed from one generation to the next, and these stories claim that they had to make a deal with the Devil to make something worthwhile out of the land. The families didn’t know when he’d come to collect his pay.The founding families and their devil-touched kin. That’s what the more unkind community members whisper in their wake whenever they attend fundraisers or town festivals. To be fair, they’re not completely wrong on that end, it can feel a bit like hell knowing what lies beneath the entirety of Lethe. Many of the families don’t remember a time where they didn’t coexist with the Down Under — although there is no record that they have that speaks to its specific existence. It was in 1982 that the founding council members at the time first recorded and identified the Down Under, but many records were lost in the fire of ‘85. It was a difficult blow to endure considering how robust and extensive the records of the Founding Families once were. Not even the mayor nor any of the township government could claim such an expansive library on the history and goings-ons of Lethe. With the responsibility of knowledge came the responsibility of forethought and guidance. It’s in the shadows that they operated, ensuring the safety and continuation of the town they were rooted in. To ensure the safety of the people, the Founding Council believed that they maintain the shield of ignorance for the mundane community that is able to, for the time being, peacefully coexist alongside the Down Under. There is, of course, the difficult matter of dealing with the more tangible manifestations that manage to claw their way to the surface. As a result, the Council members are tasked with maintaining the blissful veil of ignorance by eliminating the manifestations before they become an issue. The problem as of late is that, even with a surplus of resources and wealth of knowledge, their will has waned and their numbers are now few. There aren’t many who are willing to have the veil lifted from their eyes, and even fewer that are ready to slaughter the horrors it breeds.ADDITIONAL DETAILS — The Founding Council has five chairs, and it is these five that ultimately make the decisions. They operate as something of a shadow government within Lethe’s society, with the mayor and the town’s official council acting as their puppets more than anything. This is not known to the general public, though, and the Founding Council prefers to keep it that way. The additional members of the organization were invited by one of the five chairs — as you have to know somebody who knows somebody to get an in, or a Chair specifically nominated you to the organization. All five chair members must approve any member of the Founding Council. Chair positions are inherited.
THE FOUNDING COUNCIL
The Tolliver Chair — Primarily the mediator and the guiding light of the Founding Council. Their ideal Lethe is a Lethe that no longer has to coexist with the Down Under, its elimination is their ultimate agenda.— Adrian Tolliver
The Wolfe Chair — Their name has had more weight on their legacy than one might initially think. They hunt the feral Lost and eliminate the Lazari that have fallen under the sway of their dark urges. Wolves, the lot of them, that have decided to hunt monsters instead of sheep. — Richard Wolfe III
The Skelton Chair — The Skeltons — they keep this town clean! Quite literally. The Skeltons are the town’s cleaners, certified experts in making sure the skeletons stay in the closet and out of people’s way. The job, though arduous and largely thankless, is imperative when it comes to keeping the locals ignorant and safe.— Effy Skelton
The Greever Chair — No one really asks what the Greever Chair does, and they operate far better because of it. They grease hands when necessary, pay people to look the other way, and eliminate the people that don’t know how to keep their trap shut. The definition of “eliminate” here is highly flexible, by the way.— Hildebrand Greever
The Caldwell Chair — It is only because of the Caldwell Chair that any research at all has been cultivated and any records have been maintained. There was a brief period of time where the Caldwell Chair’s predecessor was nearly dismissed for their unethical research methods, but that has no bearing on the current Caldwell Chair holder — open to volunteer

If anyone knew of the true origins of the White Rabbit Investigative Services, they might not be so inclined to work with them. They all met in high school, all tried and true Lethe locals with nothing but too much time on their hands and a relentless sense of curiosity. It wasn’t long before they began to share stories about their differing curiosities, ghost stories, cold cases, conspiracy theories, the occult. Their shared fascination with the macabre and reverence for the dead (and sometimes undead) eventually led them to poke their noses in places they didn’t belong. One dead high schooler later, and the group was sitting by a grave, wondering why no one did anything — wondering why everyone was deciding to look the other way. No matter the evidence they collected, no matter what information they were able to gather, the case remained closed and someone they had treasured was still six feet under.White Rabbit Investigative Services was founded on failure. Failure to protect someone they held dear, and failure to hold accountable those who had their friend’s blood on their hands. It wasn’t long after that the unofficial high school club disbanded — citing things such as wanting to focus on college, getting a job, or finally making it big.And they tried to, for years and years — some even gathering some semblance of a life outside of Lethe’s borders. But Lethe always has a way of drawing its prodigal children back, and punishing them. The killer who had ended their friend’s life had become obsessed with the prospect of burying the secrets they held and finishing the job. As the year had dragged on, the obsession had taken root until the thought of its satisfaction was all the killer subsisted on.Their first investigation ended with their first murderer — although, please note for the record it was in self-defense.After the incident, the group decided to remain united and use their uniquely cultivated set of skills and knowledge to bring people peace in whatever way that they could. So far, that has translated to them helping solve cold cases as well as ensure that the dead found peace as well. Sometimes, when they’re feeling particularly curious, they even lend their services out as “private investigators”. Even to this day, they find it difficult to shake their old habits — they did start out as meddling high school kids after all.ADDITIONAL DETAILS — Consider them your mavericks, your rogues — they have an idea of what’s going on in Lethe but don’t ascribe to one group or the other. In a more professional capacity, they act as consultants for cold cases and advocate for people who need assistance with consequential legal proceedings, when necessary. Unofficially, White Rabbit Investigative Services tries to dole out justice when they’re able to. There tends to be frequent arguments over what “justice” means.

When asked ‘Who started the great fire of Lethe?’ most locals will point their fingers at the Howlers Motorcycle Club. The accuracy of their answer doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things — what matters is that everyone believes that the Howlers started it and no one ever cares enough to claim otherwise. No one really cared that the club lost half of its members in those fires or that half of that half rose from their graves three days later. No one knows about how the club had to take out their own members at the risk of being labeled ‘monsters’ forevermore. It’s etched into the history of the club, how their true inception and comradery was the day they had to end the lives of some of their own. No one knows because no one cares to ask the Howlers about their history or their inception, and they prefer to keep it that way.The Howlers were one of the first groups established in Lethe in the year 1972. It was an informal club, primarily meant to be a space for people to compare their builds and tools, to teach each other how to work their bikes and fix them. They knew that motorcycles typically entailed a certain kind of lifestyle and connotation but the wealth of knowledge and comradery was something too rare and precious for the founding members to pay any mind to the onlookers. The Howlers began to gain a reputation, though, when they began pushing back against law enforcement trying to actively police their bar (and other, less legal activities). Since they were a community, they were determined to care for their own — and doing so necessitated that they use under-the-table means of gaining more cash.Within recent years, the MC has noticed their numbers dwindling, what with their reputation and the general distaste many of the more affluent locals seem to turn their way. They’re still known for being more than ready and willing to engage in criminal activity to make their ends meet, but still you’re not likely to find a more rowdy and fun bar to go to than the Ninth Circle. You’re also unlikely to find any better mechanics for hire than the crew that makes up the club. What the locals of Lethe still have yet to understand is that the MC is a community staple — they make sure that Lethe stays Lethe, horrors and all.ADDITIONAL DETAILS — The club is still considered by the more uppity locals as a group of lowlifes and degenerates. But they can’t deny that the club hosts some really great events. One that’s well known by Lethe locals are the FIGHT CLUBS they host every FIRST AND THIRD FRIDAY of the month in the warehouse at the edges of downtown. Once a month, they also hold soup kitchens and toy drives for the community. While they don’t have a formal mechanic shop, many of the members do odd handyman jobs around town. Their primary source of income is the Ninth Circle bar.

It all started as a way to rip the sheet out from under Father Benedict Thain, as nothing more than a child trying to break someone else's toy because his own was ripped from his hands first. A son born from original sin, the rotten fruit of the womb, Leon Delfino emerged from the dark underbelly of Lethe with a mission of embarrassing the good Father for turning a blind eye and pretending to be oh, so pious to the masses. If Leon were to be treated like the monster lurking in his father's shadow, he would wear it like a crown. A changeling, a replacement for the son that was never wanted. But, he wouldn’t do it alone, not when there were so many others like him.Amassing a following was easy, child’s play for someone like Leon. The weak ones were a natural starting point. Their faith so fragile that he twisted it into something dark, encouraging their sins to manifest after years left dormant. It was a simple question, would thou like to live deliciously? He played with them like puppets, guiding them onto the paths he needed them to walk on, like the devil ushering the damned into Hell. All anyone in this damned town wanted was to be told they were allowed to listen to their animal instincts, that it was okay to drink, to fuck, to be the person they hid beneath their morals with a lock and key that only Leon had access to. They drank his words like ambrosia gifted from the Gods and held the godling on a pedestal of their making. It didn’t take long for the ones questioning the word of The Changelings to attend a meeting, soaking up the hedonism and deliverance from the man surrounded by angels on each of his shoulders. The Changelings, of course, attend mass at The Church of Wayward on Sundays for the sake of convincing the poor, simple sheep to leave the herd and join a new one that isn’t as suffocating. The faithless, sure. They were cannon fodder. But the faithful are the ones who absorb his message most. What they so desperately seek is the freedom to give oneself over to longing that sat heavy and desperate in the pit of their bellies. And who better to convert than those who are already seeking forgiveness from a God that hates them so?ADDITIONAL DETAILS — While known to many, The Changelings should be considered a newer organization within Lethe. When compared to the Church, their numbers are lacking, but their loyalty to the group is in spades. The parties that masquerade as meetings take place at Leon’s home, which rests on a plot of land owned by the Delfinos, aptly named Serpent's Touch. You don’t have to go home after, but you can’t stay there.

The member groups of Lethe are based on a tarot deck — of the 78 that can be found in a deck, only 8 are listed. If you are stuck on creating a character for the world of Lethe, you can always come to this page and treat these member group descriptions as prompts for getting started with your character. Should you have a character in mind, you can choose whichever group you see fit, whether it be due to the color of the member group, vibes, or the themes of the card. Next to the name of the member group is the icon that will be reflected on your character’s profile.
DEATH ☠︎︎
Sometimes Death rides in with fanfare — a black flag with a white pattern, sitting atop a white horse. Other times, Death walks in, a cloak in hiding their gaunt features, a scythe shining in their group. The white is meant to signify the purity of their endeavors, for Death is colored by nothing and wants for nothing. Sometimes they are covered in armor, to remind others of their invincibility, of how they can never be felled. Other times, they go to their visitors in a cloak, for many know of the inevitability of Death’s visit. They are simply the end, the promise of closure. We all end up dead, do we not? King, pauper, soldier — it is in the soil that we all return. And the cycle begins once again, so their journey continues on forevermore.
Hex Code: #aa5189
Upright: Transformation, Endings, Change, Transition, Letting Go, Release
Reversed: Fear of Change, Repeating Negative Patterns, Resisting Change, Stagnancy, Decay
EMPEROR ♔
A stoic ruler sits on the throne, and in their dominion you see the heads of their constant companions, the austere ram. A scepter and an orb, the symbols of their right to rule and the kingdom that they must studiously watch. The beard is long, demonstrating their wisdom and experience — vital traits for ensuring that their power and authority is utilized for the benefit of those that call their kingdom home. If you look closer, you see the mountains that match the height of their ambition, so wide and steadfast, demonstrating their determination. It is only through sheer willpower and strength that the throne remains yours, still.
Hex Code: #C26861
Upright: Stability, Structure, Protection, Authority, Control, Practicality, Focus, Discipline
Reversed: Tyrant, Domineering, Rigid, Stubborn, Lack of Discipline, Recklessness
FOOL ☘
The card depicts a young person, marching into the wide open world. Their face is joyful, hopeful, excited — on their back is nothing but a small pack, made even smaller by the wide expansive path and horizon that lies beyond them. One step more, one step closer to the unknown. There is a dog there, its maw open, barking in warning. The figure does not hear the panic in its yap, the call for caution. Do they hear the tremor in its voice? Do they see the dangers that lie ahead? The figure cannot afford to fail, there are too many dreams they wish to make real — do not let them slip away.
Hex Code: #6b529c
Upright: Beginnings, Freedom, Innocence, Originality, Adventure, Idealism, Spontaneity
Reversed: Reckless, Careless, Distracted, Naive, Foolish, Gullible, Stale, Dull
HANGEDMAN ♘
A person hangs, suspended in the air by a rope tied around their ankle, dangling them from a tree — well, the tree. The living world tree, whose roots are in the underworld, whose canopy reaches the high heavens. The person hangs there serenely, one foot bound while the other remains free. They look on contemplatively, hands clasped behind their back, a yellow light shining around their head like a halo. One might think that a person hanging might evoke panic, worry, or the like — but no, they are still and look on, ruminating calmly from their unusual perch in the tree while the world continues to turn.
Hex Code: #a89f18
Upright: Sacrifice, Waiting, Uncertainty, Lack of Direction, Perspective, Contemplation
Reversed: Stalling, Disinterest, Stagnation, Avoiding Sacrifice, Standstill, Apathy
HERMIT ☾
An old person stands at the peak of a mountain, a warm, glowing lantern in one hand and a well-worn staff in the other. The hike to the peak of the mountain was only possible because of their accomplishment, determination — and they have reached the peak of it, the greatest success of all. Carefully they walked the path, using prudence, wisdom, and knowledge to carve their journey forward. Their commitment to achieving their goal was iron-clad, a white-knuckled grip that ensured they wouldn’t sway or turn away. Why do you walk this path, dear hermit? The peak is reached but the view atop it is so very lonely.
Hex Code: #5b6cc1
Upright: Self-reflection, Introspection, Contemplation, Withdrawal, Solitude, Search for Self
Reversed: Loneliness, Isolation, Recluse, Being Anti-Social, Rejection, Returning to Society
SUN ✹
It sits, shining in the sky — the solar entity that the earth revolves around, chasing perpetually. After even the darkest of night, the dawn shines relentlessly. Sometimes, in its depictions, you can see two children playing in its shining raise, their innocence observable by all. Their purity is warmed in the sun, and in its light they play on, basking in the vitality it provides. There is no time to cower away from it, to hide in the shade — its light will touch all. Why would you want to hide away from the joy it perpetually provides? Bask in it while you can, before the night inevitably comes in to chase its brightness away.
Hex Code: #e2a807
Upright: Happiness, Success Optimism, Vitality, Joy, Confidence, Happiness, Truth
Reversed: Blocked Happiness, Excessive Enthusiasm, Pessimism, Unrealistic Expectations, Conceitedness
WHEEL OF FORTUNE ☸
It is understandable that, since each individual is unique, the Wheel of Fortune might vary in the way it is depicted. It wouldn’t be interesting if every person’s fate was the same, no? Sometimes on the wheel you might see four creatures: an angel, an eagle, a bull, and a lion — the four fixed signs of the zodiac. Others claim that those are the creatures of the four christian gospels. Perhaps you might even see Anubis or the Sphinx on it. It is a wheel, though, a never-ending cycle that turns on and on. You cannot stop it, as much as you might wish to — perhaps, though, you can turn away from the wheel and roll your dice. Why not see what Fate has in store?
Hex Code: #5f8124
Upright: Change, Cycles, Fate, Decisive Moments, Fortune, Unexpected Events
Reversed: Bad Luck, Lack of Control, Clinging to Control, Unwelcome Changes, Delays
WORLD ❈
They dance in the center, one leg artfully crossed over the other. Sometimes they are depicted holding a wand, other times their arm is elegantly raised as they reach upwards. They are the epitome of balance, of fulfillment and unity. They are ever-changing in the evolution of their movement, forever participating in this dance across the universe. A red sash wraps around them as they sway, a green wreath frames them. Four entities watch on, the gospels, the cardinal signs, the elements — enraptured by this dance the world puts on for them. Whether they look on in envy or admiration, no one is sure — but my, how beautiful it is to watch.
Hex Code: #369087
Upright: Completion, Achievement, Fulfillment, Sense of Belonging, Wholeness, Harmony
Reversed: Lack of Closure, Lack of Achievement, Feeling Incomplete, Emptiness
Need everything to be a little more condensed? Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the lore? Here’s a cheat sheet to help you navigate the details of Lost in Lethe.
Lethe is located near the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. While idyllic and pleasant looking during the day, at night it seems to become a different beast entirely. When people leave Lethe it’s like looking at it through rose-colored glasses, it’s hard to remember how haunting it is. When you’re in Lethe, you sometimes forget there’s a world outside of its borders.
It seems stuck in time — the only functional technology is tech from the 80s and 90s. Most people use landlines, dial up, radios, and CDs.
Many of the Mundane locals function in Lethe without knowing what goes on, otherwise the Lost, Lazari, Cultists, and Psychs by and large are aware of how weird and hellish the town is (or unique if you ask a Cultist about how they feel about Lethe).
Lost — manifestations of the Down Under that slip into corpses, gain their memories, emotions, and identities. There are three types of lost, blood-drinkers, flesh-eaters, and energy-leeches.
Lazari — manifestations of the Down Under’s corruption. When Person A is obsessed with Person B, Person B begins to demonstrate the symptoms of Lazari such as dark urges towards Person A, obsession with Person A, and more.
Psychs — individuals who have gone through the Down Under and come out the other side with a psychic curse/gift. Few and far between, typically haunted by their experiences. So far 5 different types of Psychs are known and confirmed.
Cultists — anyone and everyone that is a parishioner of the Church of Wayward Saints. Some Lethe locals feel a type of way about them.
The town has two subplots going on: the Founding Council and Cult are currently in a cold war that will escalate soon and locals are side-eyeing the Chariot Engineering Research Company, which is covertly and discretely doing research on the Down Under and its manifestations.

Need help with figuring out what to put in your Shipper portion? Use the below questions/prompts!
A few character-building questions to help with inspiration and/or finding the character’s voice. These can be answered in-character or out of character, with dialogue only or with character introspection, and with any length you prefer.
i. Like many others, you are lost in Lethe. Was it by your own choice or against your will? Do you consider it a blessing or a blight? What brought you here, and do you intend to stay or are you simply wandering through?
ii. There are whispers of horrors that prowl in the dark corners of this town. Do you believe them? Have you witnessed any of them firsthand? If so, did they leave you unscathed, or do you still carry their mark?
iii. Some view Lethe as a waking dream, while others know it as the harbor of nightmares. Along that vein - what is your grandest wish and your greatest fear? Which one have you found, or expect to find, during your time here?

CONDUCT
Lost in Lethe is a 3-3-3 lite sci-fi/supernatural horror jcink and discord group that deals with mature themes. Because of this, all members must be at least 21 years of age in order to join the group.
We aim to create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment at Lost in Lethe and ask that all players be considerate and respectful toward everyone. We will not tolerate any bullying or harassment. We also do not tolerate any out-of-character (i.e. player to player) or in-character bigotry. Examples of this would be racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Members may choose to explore their characters experiencing these things with proper trigger warnings and sensitivity, but we will not allow any character to actively perpetuate this. Should these situations arise, we will deal with them swiftly and accordingly.
We urge players to reach out to everyone for plotting regardless of character affiliation. Sometimes, the best connections/plots form organically and we fully encourage this!
If conflict arises between members, we ask that they first try to come to a solution themselves. If this does not work and the issue continues, please contact the admins.
Godmodding and meta-gaming will not be tolerated. At Lost in Lethe, godmodding is when one character controls the actions of another and meta-gaming is when a character knows information that they shouldn’t. Please coordinate with your writing partner(s) and proactively communicate with your writing partner(s).
We ask that members be mindful of triggers - any triggers that are tagged on the site should be tagged on discord. We ask that within the server, members use spoilers on the content with a trigger warning preceding the description. Triggers on the site should be tagged at the top of the post.
Please be kind to the admins! We’ve worked hard and will continue to do so for all of our members.
REGISTRATION AND CHARACTER DETAILS
All members will only register accounts for their characters. No OOC accounts are needed!
Register your character’s account as Firstname Lastname. For example, Josephine Sloane.
We ask that you join the Discord server prior to registering your account.
If you have five characters and want to bring a six character, all five characters must have at least four ACTIVE threads if they're not involved in a subplot. if they are involved in a subplot, they must have at least four ACTIVE threads with at least two threads related to/progressing the subplot.
If you have six characters and want to bring in a seventh, we requre a one month cool down period before bringing in your seventh character.
All members have a hard limit of seven characters maximum.
We ask that, if you have four characters registered and are hoping for a fifth, you demonstrate activity on the already established character accounts before picking up a fifth. Activity counts as 3 active threads across all 4 accounts.
If a character is participating in a subplot, we ask that you please maintain 3 active threads on these character accounts with 2 of the 3 being subplot-specific/progressing the subplot. Active threads/threads that progress the subplot are considered such if they have a starter and two replies, which would mean a reply from each individual involved in the thread.
If there is a character on the site/server that holds the name you were planning to utilize, please look into another name or utilize the character’s middle name (which they will be addressed by).
For DISCORD — once accepted, you’ll be able to set up your character’s profile through Tupperbox. For further detailed instructions, please refer to the #gameplay-guide channel in the server.
All characters, both playable and NPCs must be at least 21 years of age or older.
FACECLAIMS
Faceclaims are totally up to player. Please note that known problematic people (ie. known zionists, abusers, etc.) as well as deceased FCs will not be allowed.
Some canon ethnicities are locked while others are open. We ask that you follow the canon and if you have alternatives, please approach the admins. For example, if your character has a direct relation to another, they must match their ethnicity.
POSTING AND ACTIVITY
This is a hybrid RP which means players can write threads and interact on BOTH PLATFORMS. However, in order for a discord interaction to be considered “canon”, players must post their threads on the site. Only threads posted on the site will be considered official and canon. We ask that all characters involved in the thread post/reply to the thread to have the activity counted on their character accounts.
Members are expected to post TWO THREADS per a character each month on the site. Development posts, requests, and communication threads will not be counted towards activity.
Additionally, if your character is involved in a subplot, they are required to write TWO THREADS per a month relevant to the subplot.
If you know you’ll need a hiatus, please let the admins know in the #activity-updates channel on DISCORD.
If your character has been archived by mistake, please reach out to one of the admins on DISCORD.
We ask that all members respect any trigger topics for other members. We understand that Lost in Lethe is an original world with dark themes, but discuss any sensitive topics with fellow members to make sure they are comfortable.
